FIberglass Anyone?

Last night, I decided to take a peek at cragslist for fly rods. I've been looking for a saltwater rod in the 8-10 range. I've been saving up for one of two brands that have lifetime warranties, something I think is necessary. That being said, it never hurts to look for a bargain.

Last night I found a Martin "Tuffy" model 3-017: 8wt for $20. It looks like it has never been used. Honestly, practically mint condition. Now, it may not be worth even $20. If so, great! I'll feel less guilty using such a well preserved rod.

Here are a few close-ups of the important parts. I've never used fiberglass. Anyone have any tips or suggestions? Is there anything I should do to touch it up? Cement the eyelet threading? I have no idea.

And here are a couple poppers I tried to tie. The bodies are made of synthetic wine corks. There is some streamer hair, deer tail (thanks Grandpa for picking up that road kill), and some flash in there as well. I used Bic permanent markers to color the heads.

  1. No sage advice about the rod, man...but those poppers look awesome. Nice!

  2. thanks, erin. I'm really pleased with how they pull in the water. The synthetic cork material is really great. I cut it with a knife leaving it more polygonal than rounded. maybe sanding it down would work to get that nice cylindrical shape.

  3. I've played around with wine cork poppers before...cut them down with a razor blade...used some super glue....my fingers ended up attached to the popper. I'll have to try again. ;)

  5. I'd suggest hopping over to the Fiberglass Rod Forum. There are a ton of folks there who can advise on the glass. But whatever, fish on and enjoy!
